Technical Authoring

User Guides

When writing user guides, our aim is to provide:-

  • A high-level introduction to the application's features
  • An identification of key tasks and clear explanation of the steps that need to be carried out to achieve these tasks
  • The users with a clear understanding of concepts and the implications of carrying out the various identified tasks
  • A visually attractive text that users will find easy to read utilising graphics and screen shots where relevant
  • Text which is written in an appropriate language style for the target readers

Web Sites and Corporate Intranets

If your company needs a web site, we have the graphic design and technical skills to produce this for you, as well as ensuring that it is registered with the leading search engines in such a way as to maximise the probability of exposure to your target audience.

Our web site skills can also help you create a corporate intranet and knowledge base for dissemination of vital information in an easily accessible and intuitive format.

Translation services

If you have a requirement for customising your software applications for international use, we can offer a specialist language translation service. We localise software applications, web sites and online help systems, and translate user guides. We offer the expertise to enable software to be converted to use language resource files so that it may be distributed in a number of different languages.

As a software company, with a global customer base ourselves, we have a great deal of experience working with computer documentation, online help and software, and this contributes to our professional results. An additional benefit of this approach is also that you (or your users) can very easily customise screen labels and text.

Online Help Systems

All applications need effective online help systems. We use Robohelp™ and can provide consultancy, training courses, and system development using this leading tool. Robohelp™ supports the major online help formats:-

  • Winhelp
  • Compiled HTML Help
  • Web Help

Winhelp (.hlp) was the standard Windows help file format until 1997 when Microsoft made a strategic decision to change its help file format to HTML Help. However, it is still a popular choice and is easy to create either from scratch or from previous documentation or manuals. It provides a compiled help file with a table of contents/expanding and collapsing navigation tree, search facilities, index, context sensitivity, hyperlinks and graphics. The files are not dependent on the presence of a browser.

HTML Help (.chm) is now the de facto standard help system for Microsoft applications. It utilises ActiveX™ to provide a table of contents, index, a word search facility, and also supports Java™ and a range of scripting languages such as JavaScript™. The HTML pages, graphics, and other files are compiled into a relatively small file which can be distributed with the application. There is no limit to the size of the help file or topics etc. and Java™ and a range of other scripting languages including JScript™ are supported. In addition, HTML Help is fully compliant with the language features of Microsoft Windows® 2000.

Web Help is available for web-based applications, or if you want to provide a help server or knowledge base from your web site - Winhelp and HTML Help may not be run over the web or an intranet. The help is provided in uncompiled HTML, is fully functional and may be viewed with any browser. As it is not compiled, it is distributed as a number of different html and graphics files.
